The secretary general of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP), Nayef Hawatmeh, assured that the Palestinian cause is entering a "historic golden opportunity to reconstruct the real national unity with a new united political program." But, he added, "The opportunity could be destroyed by bilateral proportional distribution of power between Fatah and Hamas."
Hawatmeh said, "Any revolution that is not based on national unity and national vision, which is not nationalistic, revolutionary, clear and transparent is doomed to failure and corruption."
Hawatmeh stressed the importance of not missing this opportunity as Palestinians cannot bear any more of the mistakes of their leadership, or Zionist or colonial rule.
He said, during a speech in Damascus at a gathering for the 38th anniversary of the launch of the DFLP, "16 years since the Oslo agreements and all the illusions of the partial solutions have collapsed and the promises made to the Palestinian people have collapsed." He continued, "The fundamental condition of the victory of the Palestinian people is the defeat of imperialism and of Israel."
At the mass gathering leaders from the Palestinian factions participated, as well as Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) members and a number of national, cultural and academic figures.
Hawatmeh noted that the agreement between Fatah and Hamas should rely on cooperation instead of Fatah or Hamas unilateralism. He said the Mecca agreement was positive in that it ended internal Palestinian fighting, but it was negative in that it was below the standards of the National Agreement Document.
