DFLP commemorates 40 days since leader's death
May 25, 2009

The Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP) in the central Gaza Strip commemorated on Sunday 40 days since the death of Jabar Al-Qreinawi, one of the DFLP’s top leaders.

The commemoration was held in the Nusayrat Refugee Camp as a military march rallied from Nusayrat to Al-Bureij.

Several DFLP and other Palestinian factions' high-profile leaders took part in the commemoration, along with large numbers of supporters.

Member of the DFLP’s central committee Talal Abu Dharifa delivered a speech on behalf of the secretary-general, Nayef Hawatmeh. He applauded Gaza's citizens for their steadfastness in the face of the Israeli “holocaust” during the last military offensive against the Strip.

He also highlighted that the Palestinian people needed to end rivalry amongst themselves, and restore national unity in order to counter the major challenges facing them, and to rebuild the Gaza Strip after Israeli forces destroyed large parts of it.

He also pointed out that the new Netanyahu-led Israeli government did not recognize international resolutions on Palestine, and instead suggested autonomy in the West Bank and Gaza, and was talking about economic peace in exchange for Israel’s security. The government, he added, does not recognize the Palestinian right to statehood, and a return of refugees who were forcibly displaced from their homes and lands.

On behalf of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), Jamil Muzhir delivered a speech representing the other Palestinian left-wing front. He highlighted that Netanyahu, right after he visited the US, announced that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel, and asserted there would be no disengagement from settlements, nor would Palestinian refugees be allowed to return to their lands. Thus, Muzhir maintained that both secret and public negotiations with Israel should be halted.
