Statement

Declaration of the Democratic Front in Lebanon on the 61st anniversary of Al-Nakba

- The political and social rights of the refugees in Lebanon
- The construction of the Nahr Al-Bared Camp
- The right to return and the rejection of naturalization

May 15 of every year, the Palestinian people commemorate the anniversary of the Catastrophe (Al-Nakba), which occurred in 1948. Our people within and outside the homeland still suffer its consequences due to the occupation of the land, crimes, blockade, arrests, discrimination and oppression, in addition to the expulsion of millions of refugees who are deprived of exercising their right to return. This collective and mandatory uprooting represents one of the worst crimes that the humanity has known.

On this anniversary of the Great Catastrophe, the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (FDLP) affirms that there will be no settlement of the conflict while Israel continuously fails to fulfill the resolutions of international law. There will be no resolution of this strife until there is total Israeli withdrawal from the Arab and Palestinian territories occupied in 1967, the creation of the state of Palestine with Jerusalem as its capital, the dismantlement of all settlements and the recognition of the right of refugees to return to their homes and properties.

The Democratic Front considers that any position taken against the rights of refugees affects the destiny of more than six million Palestinians who live in the diaspora and is a detriment to peace and security in the area. The organization also assures that any attempt to reach a settlement outside the framework of Resolution 194 (relating to the refugees) will benefit Israel alone and will be rejected by all Palestinian forces.

On this occasion, the DFLP calls on all forces and Palestinian organizations to bring national dialogue to a success; to overcome limited, sectarian and partisan agendas; and to see that national interest, unity and independent will prevail—rising far and above the danger of division.

The FDLP calls on all Palestinian forces to undertake true political participation and to develop a united strategy to present to the world, one founded on a balanced settlement and based on the resolutions of the United Nations.

It affirms its position advocating the holding of legislative and presidential elections on the established date and based on proportional representation. Likewise, it insists on the reconstruction of the institutions of the PLO—especially the National Council—through elections based on proportional representation and having the purpose of activating and developing the institutions of the PLO

On the anniversary of Al-Nakba, the Democratic Front reaffirms that the Palestinian people in the Lebanon firmly uphold their right to return in accordance with Resolution 194, and it rejects all initiatives around naturalization and displacement. The DFLP calls for the organization of Palestinian-Lebanese relationships on clear political, social and juridical bases so that they serve and constitute essential support to the struggle for the return of the refugees.

The Democratic Front renews the call for the rapid construction of the Nahr Al-Bared Camp on its entire area and for the eliminations of restrictions on the movements of its residents.
